Season Preview: 2016-17 Women's Basketball

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College women's basketball program is fortunate to be returning three talented sophomores who have been named co-captains of the SeaWolves in 2016-17—Vanese Barnes (Jay, Maine), Destinie Montano (Chicopee, Mass.), and Hannah Heald (Union, Maine). Barnes is a fierce defender with incredible offensive footwork, and Montano is lightening quick on both ends as well as a vocal leader on and off the floor. Heald will start at the center position and bring hard work and composure as the inside presence. In her first season as Head Coach, Katie Bergeron states, "The three balance each other extremely well and bring their own unique qualities to the team."

To complement the returners, the SeaWolves welcome many talented first-year players. Kaylah Abdul (South Berwick, Maine) is a skilled and versatile point guard. Jordan Farquharson (Ryegate, Vt.) can do it all; she's a great defender, excellent three-point shooter, but can also muscle down low. Keep an eye out for the high basketball IQ of Emily Hogan (Jay, Maine) and the sharp shooting skills of Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) and Emily Keene (Livermore Falls, Maine).

Coach Bergeron commented, "The goal for this team is to recognize and respond to what is thrown at them, both offensively and defensively, through the understanding of basketball concepts. Being able to adjust mid-game, and efficiently execute game plans and strategies will take us to the next level. I'm incredibly excited to lead this program. The women have put in hours of conditioning and nothing but hard work and determination.  The team culture that the captains have helped foster is second to none. We will certainly be a united force this year."
