AUBURN, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team took its second loss of the year 54-48 in the first of a two-part Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) season series with Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Tuesday, Dec. 14.

Trailing by nine points at the midway mark, the SeaWolves put together their best 10 minutes in the third winning the quarter 17-8 to even the score at 39-39. CMCC opened the fourth on a 10-2 run that put the home team ahead for good.

In a game that neither team shot the ball particularly well, the difference came on the boards and in particular the offensive glass. CMCC out-rebounded SMCC 57-38 and 24-14 on the offensive.

Sophomore captain Tara Flanders (Windham, Maine) led the way for the SeaWolves with 12 points on 4-9 from the floor. First-year guard Hannah Richards (Bradley, Maine) picked up a heavy defensive responsibility and contributed eight points and three assists on the other end; sophomore captain Bailey Whitney (Norway, Maine) tallied 15 rebounds.

CMCC's Emily Strachan topped all scorers in the game posting 14 points and 11 rebounds.

SMCC dips to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in league action; CMCC climbs to 10-2 on the year, 5-1 YSCC.

The SeaWolves will round out the first semester on Saturday, Dec. 18 when they play host to the Knights from Vermont Technical College in the first of two conference meetings. Tip-off at The HUB is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
