Lady SeaWolves Conquer Knights Behind Pickering’s Career Day

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team routed the Knights from Vermont Technical College (VTC) 80-11 in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) action at The HUB on Saturday, Dec. 18.

The SeaWolves put together a dominant 30-point performance in the first quarter and held the opposition to just one point at the half. SMCC continued to produce in the third featuring 4-made three-pointers by first-year Maddy York (Nobleboro, Maine) and in the fourth backed by 11 points from first-year Shea Pickering (Drewsville, N.H.).

Pickering totaled career-high stat line at 35 points and 20 rebounds—14 offensive. She connected on 15-27 from the field (56.0%) and added four assists and two steals. York finished with 22 points and 6-made three-pointers; and first-year center Maggie Strohm (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) recorded a career-high seven points and 10 rebounds.

As a team, SMCC ripped a season-high 63 rebounds and a season-high 34 offensive rebounds.

The result pushes SMCC to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play— Head Coach Katie Stannard is just two wins away from her 100th. Vermont Tech drops to 1-8 overall, 1-4 YSCC.

The SeaWolves get back to action on Wednesday, Jan. 8 in a home date with the University of Connecticut at Avery Point (NJCAA). Tip-off at The HUB is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
