Fourth Quarter Heroics Fuel SMCC On The Road

WARWICK, R.I.— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team returned to action with an exciting 73-65 road win over 10th-ranked NJCAA Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) on Saturday, Jan. 8.

Behind 47-46 after three quarters, the Lady SeaWolves cashed in one of their best late-game performances of the season, outscoring the opposition 27-18 to ruin CCRI's 6-game winning streak.

Four finished in double figures for SMCC led by first-year Kyla Greenleaf's (Topsham, Maine) 19 points. Sophomore captain Ashleigh Mathisen (Portland, Maine) and first-year Shea Pickering (Drewsville, N.H.) both contributed 12 points, and sophomore captain Tara Flanders (Windham, Maine) totaled 11.

CCRI's Maggie Schwab topped all scorers with 25 points.

SMCC wins its second in a row to move to 9-2 overall; CCRI slips to 10-2 on the year.

Head Coach Katie Stannard will go for her 100th career win when the SeaWolves host the Bobcats from Paul Smith's College in a make-up on Tuesday, Jan. 11. Tip-off at the HUB is set for 5:30 p.m.
