SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team suffered a 70-61 defeat to the rival Mustangs from Central Maine Community College (CMCC) in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) action on Wednesday, Feb. 9.

The SeaWolves came out firing on a 9-2 run to begin the game and finished the first frame ahead 19-15. The offense in the second went silent and SMCC produced its lowest quarter point total of the season—outscored by the opposition 20-3.

The momentum shifted for the SeaWolves, battling back to make it a 1-point deficit at the 4:18 mark in the fourth quarter. The home team couldn't find consecutive stops on the defensive end and after the exchange of timeouts, the Mustangs pulled away late to secure the victory.

First-year guard Hannah Richards (Bradley, Maine) scored a career-high 27 points, knocking down five three-pointers. Sophomore captain Tara Flanders (Windham, Maine) went for nine points and 11 boards, and sophomore center Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) totaled a season-high six blocks.

CMCC's Emily Strachan topped all scorers with 32 points—adding eight rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes of work.

The result moves SMCC to 17-3 overall, 11-2 YSCC. CMCC improves to 22-3 on the season and also 11-2 in league standings.

The regular season will conclude with a 2-0 win by way of a Vermont Technical College forfeit, scheduled Saturday, Feb. 12. The playoff seeding and schedule will be announced early next week.
