SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team took down the #3 Moose from the University of Maine at Augusta 79-57 in the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) semifinal round on Wednesday, Feb. 23.

The Moose jumped out to a 5-0 lead to begin the game, but it was first-year captain Kyla Greenleaf (Topsham, Maine) who totaled eight points in a perfect first-quarter shooting performance to give SMCC a lift 22-17. The visitors won the second quarter to get ahead by two at the break.

The SeaWolves trailed 44-42 late in the third quarter before putting together a 19-3 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters to pad a comfortable lead and secure their third victory over the Moose this season.

Three scored in double figures for SMCC led by first-team all-conference selection Hannah Richards (Bradley, Maine) who recorded 17 on 6-9 shooting, and pulled down seven rebounds. Greenleaf threw in 13 points and sophomore captain Bailey Whitney (Norway, Maine) logged an effective 27 minutes with 10 points and eight rebounds.

UMA's Taznejia Valencia led her team with 12 points.

Head Coach Katie Stannard commented, "I am very proud of this team's ability to focus and execute a game plan—every single member of the team contributed to this win and it started back in August! We are looking forward to the opportunity to compete for a conference championship this weekend."

SMCC will travel to #1 Central Maine Community College to compete for the conference championship in a rematch of the 2019 and 2020 season on Saturday, Feb. 26. Tip-off in Auburn is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
