Women’s Basketball Suffers Overtime Defeat To Open 22-23 Campaign

AUBURN, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team was victim to a 71-75 overtime loss to St. Lawrence- Champlain (Canada) at the first day of the annual Can Am Tournament hosted by Central Maine Community College on Saturday, Oct. 29.

SMCC outscored their opponent in each of the first two quarters highlighted by first-year Jaylyn Bartolome's (Sanford, Maine) 12 first-half points. Sophomore captain Maddy York (Nobleboro, Maine) came off the bench to score seven points in the third quarter by way of 3-4 shooting.

Both teams traded three-point buckets to finish the fourth quarter and keep the score level at 61 apiece. Champlain would go on to sink a three-pointer and a free throw inside the final 30 seconds of overtime to walk away with the victory.

Bartolome led her team with 21 points, and junior captain Bailey Whitney (Norway, Maine) notched a double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds.

The Lady Seawolves begin their season 0-1 and will turn around to host the University of New Brunswick- Saint John on the second day of the Can Am, Sunday, Oct. 30.
