SMCC cruises by Northern Essex to extend win streak

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team earned its third straight victory in a 76-24 rout over the Knights from Northern Essex Community College (NECC) in non-conference action on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

The Lady Seawolves buckled down on the defensive end to limit the opposition to single digit scoring efforts in all four quarters. Meanwhile 13 different players found the scoresheet for SMCC, headlined by first-year Ember Hastings' (Hollis, Maine) 13 points. Sophomore Jaylyn Bartolome (Sanford, Maine) landed in double figures with 11 and senior co-captain Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) logged her usual five blocked shots.

As a team, the Seawolves capitalized with 37 points off turnovers and assisted on 20 of 29 made field goals.

NECC's Mirelys Morales led her team with 15 points on 5-14 shooting, and Janisa Price pulled down 10 rebounds.

SMCC climbs to 11-2 on the season; NECC moves to 6-5.

The action continues when the Seawolves play host to the Herons from Great Bay Community College in the second leg of the Yankee Small College Conference regular season series on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Tip-off at The HUB is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
