SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team was defeated 68-54 by the Moose from the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) action on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

Junior co-captain Maddy York (Nobleboro, Maine) knocked down two three-pointers and UMA's Alisyn Alley netted eight points to headline an exciting first quarter that had the Moose leading 16-15. SMCC outscored the opposition by eight in the second quarter to take a 7-point margin into the locker room.

The Seawolves' offensive production was stifled in the second half as the Moose reclaimed their lead in the third quarter and added to it. SMCC managed to convert just one of 17 field goal attempts in the fourth to suffer its second loss to UMA this season.

SMCC outrebounded the opposition 43-38, but it was UMA's efficiency from the floor that proved to be the difference.

York finished with 13 points and sophomore Jaylyn Bartolome (Sanford, Maine) contributed 11.

The Moose were led by Alley's 22 points and 10 rebounds; Lillian Cox came off the bench to log a double-double with 14 points (7-7) and 10 rebounds.

SMCC moves to 15-3 overall, 7-3 in conference play. UMA improves to 12-3, 9-1 YSCC.

The action continues when the Seawolves host the Bobcats from Paul Smith's College in the second leg of the regular season series on Saturday, Jan. 27. Tip-off at The HUB is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
