SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletic Department has announced the resignation of former Head Women’s Basketball Coach Katie Stannard.

Stannard was hired in May of 2016 and has since turned to be the all-time winningest coach in program history. Through eight seasons at the helm, Stannard compiled a 152-50 overall record (.752 win%) and a 83-21 mark in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) action. Further, she has produced 15 YSCC All-Conference selections (two Players of the Year), 11 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-American selections, 11 USCAA Academic All-Americans, and was honored as YSCC Coach of the Year in 2019.

Stannard set the women’s basketball record for season wins at 24, reaching that total in 2017 and again in 2020, and led the team to its first ever USCAA National Final Four appearance in her first year. She recorded YSCC post-season berths in every season and received USCAA National Tournament bids in five of seven eligible seasons.

Coach Stannard commented, “The women’s basketball program at SMCC has brought me so much more than basketball over the last eight seasons. My assistant coaches and former players have become family and I’ll be forever grateful for this time. Watching 16-18 young women come together each year, set goals, set standards and work hard to achieve those goals has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I am so proud to have called myself their coach. I will miss this program dearly, but excited to continue to cheer for the Seawolves and watch all their continued success.”

Associate Dean of Athletics and Alumni Affairs Matt Richards expressed, “Katie’s impact to the program is immeasurable. The mentorship she provided to all of her student-athletes will have such a lasting impact well beyond their playing days. I’m extremely grateful for Katie’s commitment to SMCC Athletics!”

An immediate search will be conducted by the department to fill the position.
