Women’s Soccer Reveals 2022 Schedule

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— Head Coach Ethan Wells returns for his fifth season at the helm of the women’s soccer program as the SeaWolves eye a return to the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) postseason tournament— achieving a Final Four appearance a season ago.

The Lady SeaWolves will open at home with a preseason exhibition on Friday, August 26 against the University of Maine at Farmington (NCAA Div. 3) followed by another exhibition at the University of Southern Maine (NCAA Div. 3) on Sunday, August 28.

SMCC begins its regular season with a home date against first-time opponent Villa Maria College on Sunday, September 4 and then hits the road to play the rival Mustangs of Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Thursday, September 8, this one noted as non-conference. The SeaWolves will travel to Warwick, R.I., where they are 1-1 all-time, to take on the Community College of Rhode Island (NJCAA) before returning to South Portland to welcome the Warriors from Massasoit Community College (NJCAA) on Tuesday, September 13.

Saturday, September 17 is the start of conference scheduling away at Vermont Technical College. The SeaWolves get a week in-between to prepare for Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, ranking a top team in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Coaches Poll in 2021, and then road trip to NHTI on Wednesday, September 28— where SMCC is without a win since 2015.

October begins in upstate New York against the reigning YSCC-champion Bobcats of Paul Smith’s College. The SeaWolves make their way home for a quick turnaround to play Bunker Hill Community College (NJCAA) to finish the weekend. The regular season is completed with three at home vs. Bryant and Stratton College- Albany (USCAA Div. 1), Bristol Community College (NJCAA), and a series finale with CMCC on Wednesday, October 12.

The 2022 season will feature a 6-team YSCC postseason format that is a #3 vs. #6 and #4 vs. #5 play-in round the weekend of Oct. 22-23. The Final Four stage will be held at NHTI (Concord, N.H.) Oct. 29-30 with a chance at a bid to the USCAA National Tournament in Virginia Beach, Va. Nov. 10-14.

Looking ahead, Coach Wells states, “This team is poised for success in 2022 returning starters in all three phases, and a talented recruiting class that will undoubtedly make an immediate impact. The Yankee Conference continues to showcase a high level of competition and we look forward to the challenge. With a deeper roster this season, the coaching staff plans to focus on efficiency and effectiveness with the goal to be there at the end. I can’t wait to get to work in August!”

All home soccer games are played at Wainwright Recreation Complex at 125 Gary L. Maietta Way in South Portland.
