Everyone Contributes in Lady SeaWolves Victory

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Women's Soccer team defeated Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) opponent College of St. Joseph (CSJ) 13-0 at Wainwright Field on Tuesday, August 30.

Sophomore Emily Harris (Dayton, Maine) and the Lady SeaWolves wasted no time against the Fighting Saints when Harris slotted a goal from a pass from sophomore Madelyn Wade (Brunswick, Maine) in the second minute of the game.

SMCC extended their lead by two when sophomore Hannah Fields (Shapleigh, Maine) found the back of the net from outside the 18-yard box and Wade finished a magnificent cross from first-year Samantha Munson (South Portland, Maine). The Lady SeaWolves would score four more times before the half to hold a 7-0 advantage.

The second half featured six goals by SMCC and a clean sheet for sophomore goal keeper Chelcie Phinney (Winthrop, Maine). The Lady SeaWolves finished with 41 shots, 26 of which were on goal. Wade was the top scorer with five, followed by Fields with three.

Head Coach, Julia Cyr had this to say after the match, "I could tell the first game jitters were there for everyone as the beginning of the game was a bit frantic. We settled down nicely and scored some really quality goals that came from crosses and combination play, which is really what our game is designed for. This week at training we will look to work on our foot skills and possession, but it was great to see everyone with the right ideas even if execution wasn't as tidy as I would like it. Overall, great first game with a lot of positives to take away from and build upon."
