SMCC Athletics Unveils 2021 HOF Class

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—Each year the Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletics Department looks to recognize and honor former student-athletes, coaches and administrators, as well as special supporters of the program. To date, 39 individuals and two teams have been inducted into the prestigious SMCC Athletics Hall of Fame—this year will mark the 16th annual induction ceremony. After careful consideration of all nominees, the Hall of Fame Selection Committee has chosen Alex Brown, Sonya O’Tash, Charlotte Lewis, and Michael Curtis to head this year’s induction class.

The 2021 ceremony will be held at the Portland Sheraton at Sable Oaks (South Portland) on Friday, November 5 ahead of the College’s 75th anniversary gala scheduled for Saturday, November 6. The evening will include a happy hour followed by dinner and the induction ceremony. Details regarding tickets and room blocks will be made available closer to the event date. After the postponement of last year’s event, the 2021 ceremony will also include the 2020 class of: Nick Anagnostis, Ali Waterman, Jose Nouthanthavong, and the 2007-08 Men’s Basketball Team.

 

Alex Brown (Baseball)

Alex Brown played four seasons (2011-15) for the SeaWolves baseball program and ranks atop all major statistical categories. Brown is the program’s Hit King with 136; he also ranks first all-time in games played (129), at-bats (413), runs (93), and doubles (28), and second in triples (9), home runs (12), and RBI (86). As a catcher and outfielder, Brown was voted a two-time Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) All-Conference selection, a 2014 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) First Team All-American, SMCC’s Carroll Rines Sports Person of the Year (2014), and was most recently named to the YSCC Twin Decades Team. To add to his personal achievements, Brown served as a three-year team captain and was crowned a three-time YSCC champion. Brown earned his associates degree in Architectural Engineering.

Sonya O’Tash (Women’s Basketball)

Sonya O’Tash played two seasons (2007-09) as a contributing member of the women’s basketball program. As a forward, O’Tash led her team in points per game (PPG) both seasons—and in her second season was voted YSCC Player of the Year and a USCAA All-American. She helped lead her team to a total combined 27-3 YSCC record, a conference championship in 2008, and a national tournament appearance in the same season. Spanning her career with the SeaWolves, O’Tash averaged 15.5 PPG, 8.8 REB/G, 3.1 AST/G, and 2.5 STL/G; and by result a spot on the YSCC Twin Decades Team. O’Tash earned her associates degree in Liberal Studies.

Charlotte Lewis (Softball)

Charlotte Lewis played a total of three seasons dominating from the pitching circle for the SeaWolves Softball program (2011-12, 2013-15). She ranks first all-time in appearances (69) and games started (63), and second all-time in wins (21), complete games (45), innings pitched (360.1), and strikeouts (245). She was selected a three-time YSCC All-Conference player, a two-time USCAA All-American in 2014 and 2015, and was most recently named to the YSCC Twin Decades Team. Lewis helped her team to two conference championships in 2012 and 2014 when she was named YSCC Tournament MVP. Lewis earned her associates degree in Hospitality Management.

Michael Curtis (Men’s Soccer)

Michael Curtis was a member of the Men’s Soccer program for two years (2012-2013) serving the team as an energetic center back and captain in his final season. Curtis helped anchor a defensive unit that recorded a 0.93 goals against average (GAA) in 2012 and a 1.75 GAA in 2013. Spanning his career at SMCC, the SeaWolves tallied a 22-11-1 overall record—going 18-6-1 in conference play. Curtis went on to continue his career at Husson University where he played in every match and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.
