Athletics Engagement and Academic Report: Spring 2020

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—At the conclusion of the semester, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Director of Athletics Matt Richards published the findings of the semi-annual Spring 2020 Athletics Engagement and Academic Report. The report shows student-athlete GPAs and retention rates based on United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) normal progress rules for athletic participation eligibility.

Spring 2020

  • Total student-athletes: 112 (22 more than spring 2019)
  • Overall student-athlete GPA: 2.69 (.02 points less than spring 2019)
  • Spring 2020-Fall 2020 retention rate: 88% (2% better than spring 2019) based on USCAA Normal Progress Eligibility Guidelines.
  • Student-athletes earning a 3.0 GPA or better: 48 (43% of all student-athletes)

Other interesting notes based on the 2019-20 academic year:

  • 33 student-athletes were named to the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Academic All-Conference team (3.2 GPA or better enrolled full-time)
  • 5 student-athletes were named USCAA Academic All-Americans (3.5 GPA or better after 24 credit hours)
  • Softball team GPA: 3.30
  • Student-athletes were enrolled in 2,812 total credit hours
  • Average attempted credit load for student-athletes this year was 25.1 hours (not including summer)

SMCC Athletics is proud of these efforts made by student-athletes who were enrolled in a full-time course load and found success despite the disruption of transition online due to COVID-19 restrictions. Thank you to all coaches and support staff who serve as mentors to our student-athletes on and off the playing surface.
