SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) is proud to announce that former standout golfer Tommy Stirling has been selected for induction into the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Hall of Fame, joining the Class of 2025.
A member of the SMCC golf program from 2010 to 2011, Stirling becomes the first Seawolf golfer—and only the second SMCC student-athlete overall—to receive this prestigious national honor. He was previously inducted into the SMCC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017.
Stirling’s impact on the program was historic. Across 13 competitive rounds, he posted a program-best scoring average of 75.8—a record that still stands today. His career accolades include back-to-back All-American and All-Conference selections, a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Championship, and two appearances at the USCAA National Championship Tournament.
In 2011, Stirling etched his name into the record books by winning the USCAA Individual National Championship. He fired rounds of 72 and 68 for a 140 (-4) total, winning the title by four strokes. His final-round 68 tied the tournament record for lowest single round, while his overall score ranks fourth all-time in event history. The win marked SMCC’s first-ever USCAA National Championship in any sport.
Reflecting on the honor, Stirling shared:
“I was initially shocked and thought, ‘Man, this must be fake.’ Then I read into it, and I was floored to find out I had really been chosen. I was beyond ecstatic and incredibly humbled by the recognition and the opportunity. I’ll always remember SMCC. Whenever someone asks where I went to school, I always say SMCC first—then I mention the second school I attended for my scholarship. Thank you again for this amazing recognition!”
SMCC Director of Athletics Ethan Wells offered his congratulations:
“Tommy’s selection to the USCAA Hall of Fame Class of 2025 is an incredible accomplishment. His career at SMCC continues to be celebrated at both the regional and national levels. The College community is extremely proud of his legacy as a Seawolf. With this year’s ceremony being held in Portland, I’m thrilled that Tommy will get to return home and be honored among friends and family.”
Matt Richards, SMCC’s Chief of Institutional Advancement, also shared his thoughts:
“Tommy’s contributions to SMCC Athletics and the golf program were transformative. His performance on the course rewrote the record books and delivered the college’s first national championship. His induction into the USCAA Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to his impact on the national stage. We are all incredibly proud of him.”
Following his time at SMCC, Stirling earned an athletic scholarship to Southwestern Oklahoma State University (NCAA Division II), and later turned professional, competing in golf tours across the country.
Stirling will be formally inducted during the USCAA’s 2025 National Convention, scheduled for June 1 in Portland, Maine.
Congratulations to Tommy Stirling on this well-earned honor—and thank you for continuing to make Seawolf Nation proud!
