Jennifer Conrad: Student-Athlete Spotlight

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—Jennifer Conrad is December’s student-athlete spotlight. Standing 5’9’’ tall at the forward position, Conrad leads the women’s basketball team averaging 15 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. She ranks fifth in the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) in field goal percentage (45.7) and was recently named YSCC Player of the Week for her dominant performances in week three of the regular season.

Conrad, a senior at Southern Maine Community College, studies Education and intends to graduate with her associate degree in May of 2017 with aspirations of working in special education at the elementary level. She found her inspiration as a substitute teacher at Monmouth Academy, her alma mater.

Previous to SMCC, Conrad attended the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) where she played five semesters as a member of the women’s basketball team under Head Coach Jennifer Laney. Conrad reached the 1,000-point milestone in just three semesters and scored 39 points in a single game, a record that still holds at UMA. She was named a two-time Honorable Mention All-American in the 2011-12 and 2013-14 seasons. Conrad went to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournament with the Moose and competed in the three-point competition. Previously a perimeter player, Conrad was tasked with learning the post position in her first season with the SeaWolves, making her success all the more impressive.

At Monmouth Academy, Conrad was a multi-sport athlete in soccer, softball, and basketball. She continues to play softball for the Arch Angels, a Lewiston slow pitch team that has ranked 13th among a field of 100 teams in New England. On the softball field is where Conrad met her husband and held their wedding ceremony—keeping with the theme, she named their child Easton.

In describing her experience at SMCC, Conrad commented “It’s a fresh start for me. There is a great sense community on campus. As a member of the women’s basketball team, I feel a part of a family. Coach Bergeron’s passion for the game and to this team is second to none. She would do anything for us.”

In describing her goal for the season, Conrad said, “It doesn’t have to do with scoring or getting rebounds; I want to make the USCAA All-Academic team.”

Hailing from Monmouth, Maine, Conrad lives in Augusta with her two kids and husband.
