Preparing Student-Athletes for Success On and Off the Field

The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) student-athletes arrive next week for preseason practices and orientation sessions.  The orientation sessions span the course of two days with the goal being to better equip student-athletes to succeed in the classroom, on the playing field and within the campus community. 

Orientation topics include: academic and athletic eligibility, succeeding in the classroom (faculty panel discussion), what it means to be a student-athlete at SMCC (alumni panel discussion) and social media responsibility. Student-athletes will also participate in tours of the campus Learning Commons that houses the campus library and tutoring services. Friday, August 24

Session I: 9:30am-11:30am 

  • Eligibility Seminar: Jewitt Auditorium for M/W basketball, Softball, and Baseball
  • M/W soccer practice anytime between 8am-10:30am

Groups Switch at 10:30am

  • Eligibility Seminar- Jewitt Auditorium for M/W Soccer and Golf
  • Baseball and Softball practice between 10:30am-12:30pm

Lunch: 11:30am-1pm 

Session II:  2pm-3pm

  • 2pm Tour of Learning Commons- M/W Soccer
  • 2:30pm Tour of Learning Commons- Baseball/Softball
  • 3:00pm Tour of Learning Commons-M/W Basketball and Golf

Session III: 3:30pm-5pm: “ Student Athlete Success in the Classroom”- Jewitt Auditorium

  • Panel discussion of Faculty and Staff to provide insight on the tools to be successful

5:30pm  Cookout with all SMCC Athletics, SMCC residence life staff, family and friends

Session IV: 7pm  Developing Leadership within a team Environment-Joe Urbansky- Jewitt Auditorium

Saturday, August 25

Session V:   9am-12pm

Student Athletes Assistance with Move-In

  • 9-10am  M/W Basketball
  • 10-11am  Baseball and Softball
  • 11am-12pm M/W Soccer

Lunch 11am-1pm

Session VI: 1-2:30pm   Alumni Panel Discussion and Social Media Responsibility Seminar

Dinner 5pm - 6pm

Session VII: 6:45pm - 8:30pm Guest Speaker
