Student-Athlete Orientation Equips Students for Success

Many parents arrived at the Southern Maine Community College residence halls expecting to break a sweat helping their son or daughter move into their new home for the 2011-2012 academic year.  What they weren’t expecting were members of the Seawolves varsity teams greeting them as they opened the car door and taking boxes right out of their hands.  As part of a weekend-long student-athlete orientation, SMCC athletes were stationed at both residence halls to help lighten the load for students and their families. Move-in assistance was one of several activities organized by Athletic Director Matt Richards to prepare student-athletes for what’s to come in the next nine months.  Reflecting on the weekend Richards stated “The focus was on equipping each student-athlete with the tools needed to be successful while also fostering team cohesion and a family atmosphere.” Feedback from the orientation was very positive, and administrators expect to see an increase in retention as a result of the proactive approach to student-athlete success.

Below is a list of activities and informational sessions the student-athletes attended in addition to team practices.

Student-athlete Eligibility – An informational session focused on academic and athletic rules and regulations.

Learning Commons Tour – Student-athletes toured a recently renovated area of the Campus Center that includes many student services, a library, group study areas, support for on-line studies and much more.

Faculty Panel – Q&A and open discussion with faculty members regarding academic expectations and tips for opening dialogue with professors and succeeding in the classroom.

Athletic Department Cookout – Richards manned the grill serving burgers and hot dogs to all student-athletes, coaches, administrators and their families.

Move-in Assistance – Community service started early as student-athletes helped with the 9:00am to noon move in.

Alumni Panel – College alumni returned to give academic, athletic and social advice.
