2017 Baseball Season Outlook

2017 Baseball Season Outlook

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The 2017 squad will lean on its five returning sophomores in Edgar Montan (Santiago, Dominican Republic), Nathaniel Cyr (Freeport, Maine), Kyle Parmley (Eliot, Maine), Caleb Chambers (Lebanon, Maine), and Amos Herrin (Wilton, Maine).

In his first season wearing a SMCC uniform, Chambers was a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) All-Conference selection and led the SeaWolves posting a .378 batting average and a .459 on-base-percentage. The first-year backstop recorded 17 runs-batted-in spanning 74 at-bats. This 2016 fall season, Chambers collected five extra-base hits to lead his squad in slugging percentage (.500).

As part of a 19-21 overall record a season ago, Herrin returns to the hill for the SeaWolves making 15 appearances as a rookie. Parmley, fellow righty and projected number one starter, pitched to a 3-1 record in six starts in his first season.

The SeaWolves will look to repeat this 2017 season as reigning YSCC champions under the guidance of first-year Head Coach Jordan Yanni. "This team has been working extremely hard in the gym since February in preparation for our busy slate in April— I'm looking forward to seeing this work translate to the diamond. We have all the tools to be successful in every phase of the game and to make a run at another conference title."

On this season's 16-man roster, nine have the ability to contribute on the mound—a valuable asset in the dog days of mid-April when the team will play five games in four days. Coach Yanni will utilize two left-handed weapons in his rotation in Nathan Huot (Biddeford, Maine) and Tanner Strout (Charleston, Maine), and look for production on both sides of the ball from the new addition of Max Salevsky (Hollis, Maine), a transfer from Thomas College and SMAA All-Conference selection at Bonny Eagle High School.

First-year Justin Leeman (North Yarmouth, Maine) and Cyr will offer consistency in the line-up after leading the team in hitting with .355 and .321 batting averages this 2016 fall season.

The baseball team is set to play a 21-game tour this spring featuring seven home dates and a six-game conference slate to finally host the YSCC Championship Tournament on Saturday, May 6.
