Seawolves Clobber Herons In Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team completed the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) series sweep of the Great Bay Community College (GBCC) Herons on Sunday, Apr. 9.

Game 1: W, 9-3 | [BOX]

The Herons struck first scoring two runs on a home run courtesy of Alexander Noel in the opening frame; the Seawolves answered the bell in the second to even the score. SMCC was in favor 5-3 before posting four runs in the seventh to take comfort.

Sophomores Derek Hoh (Methuen, Mass.) and Michael O'Brien (Franklin, Mass.) combined for four hits, four runs, and two RBI. Captain Andrew Martin (Dracut, Mass.) connected for his first homerun of his sophomore campaign.

SMCC starter Logan Burt (Philadelphia, Penn.) was credited the win after logging five K's over five innings; Herons' pitcher Meridius Pendell was handed the loss.

Game 2 (5 innings): W, 18-1 | [BOX]

The Seawolves dominated after the third inning, quickly piling up an insurmountable lead. To top it off in the fifth inning, sophomore Justin Colon (Aguada, Puerto Rico) unloaded a grand slam to bring his season RBI total to 25.

Sophomore Anthony Sayers (Benoni, South Africa) came up with two hits, one of which a home run, two RBI, and two runs.

GBCC's Jackson Strayer recorded the team's lone RBI.

Sophomore Joseph Townsend (Scarborough, Maine) was credited the win after logging three innings of no-hit baseball; Herons' Trevor Hovey took the loss.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Nic Lops commented, "It was nice to see some of our big-time bats come alive and our pitching staff continue to pound the zone. Need to stay focused and keep getting better every day."

The Seawolves pick up their fourth and fifth consecutive wins and climb to 11-10 overall, 3-0 in conference play.
