AUGUSTA, Maine—In an exciting doubleheader on the diamond, the Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Seawolves and the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) Moose delivered a thrilling day of baseball, splitting their matchups.
Game 1: W, 18-0 (5 innings)
The Seawolves came out swinging in the first game, dominating the Moose with an impressive 18-0 victory. SMCC showcased their offensive prowess, starting with a 10-run first inning and racking up runs in nearly every other inning. Key players stepped up, with standout performances from their lineup that included multi-hit games from Dante Tocci (Portland, Maine), Connor Boulette (Westbrook, Maine), Adam Rowland (Okotoks, Alberta, Canada) and Brady Wintle (Gorham, Maine).
The pitching was equally stellar, as the combination of Aidan Dolan (Weymouth, Mass.) and Noah Gaghan (Brunswick, Maine) kept the Moose bats silent, allowing only three hits. It was a commanding display from SMCC, leaving the Moose searching for answers as they headed into the second game.
Game 2: L, 4-3
The Moose regrouped and came out determined in the nightcap. The second game was a nail-biter, with both teams trading blows. The Seawolves took an early lead, but UMA battled back to keep the game tight. Wintle put together another game at the plate going 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs. It was a back-and-forth contest, with key defensive plays and clutch pitching from both sides. Jack Morris (Millinocket, Maine) and Brady Pert (Penobscot, Maine) combined on the mound for SMCC. In the end, the Moose managed to hold onto a slim 4-3 lead, thanks to strong late-game pitching that secured their first win of the day.
Baseball will get back to the diamond this week with a game against York County Community College on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
