Morgan and Talbot Lead SMCC to 85-70 Victory Over St. Joe's

Rutland, VT - The Seawolves came out hot in last night's game against the Saints of the College of St. Joseph's, shooting an impressive 15-29 from the field in the first half to build a 25 point lead going into the break. St. Joe's made a push in the second but the Seawolves were able to hang on and clinch the 85-70 victory.

Shooting guard Grayson Waterman (Berwick, ME) got things rolling for the Seawolves, netting a three pointer to give SM a 3-2 edge. The Saints tied the game with a Kareem Brown free throw and SMCC responded with a layup by junior forward John Morgan (Sanford, ME) to take back the lead, one that they would not relinquish. At the 4:54 mark another made layup by Morgan sparked a 10-0 Seawolves run that would give them their largest lead of the game at 44-17.

The teams exchanged baskets for the first nine minutes of the second half until an Antonio Gordon layup started a 12-0 Saints run that slashed the SM lead to 13. Sophomore shooting guard Matt Talbot (Portland, ME) slowed St. Joe's fiery comeback when he hit two free throws and a shot from beyond the arc but the Saints rattled off four unanswered points to keep the game close at 65-54. At the five minute mark Talbot and Morgan combined for nine points over the course of a minute to extend the lead back to 18 and solidify the Seawolves' triumph.

Talbot ended the game with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists while Morgan netted 18 and grabbed six boards. Shooting guards Ville Wuorenjuuri (Helsinki, Finland) and Grayson Waterman chipped in with 14 and 13 respectively.

The Saints were led by Antonio Gordon who scored a team high 25 points and Kareem Brown who added a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Seawolves (7-12, 4-4 YSCC) will look to keep this second semester win streak rolling when they travel to Great Bay CC on Wednesday.
