SMCC Bests Unity With Balanced Attack

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College men's basketball team picked up another Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) win in its 11-point defeat of Unity College at the HUB on Thursday, Feb. 2.

Junior captain John Morgan (Sanford, Maine) poured in 19 points, making 8-16 in 33 minutes on the floor. Sophomore Ryan Cloutier (Pelham, N.H.) contributed with 14 and a season-high nine rebounds. Others scoring in double-figures were sophomore Chase Soares (Falmouth, Mass.) and Dennis Cummins (Abington, Mass.) each with 10.

Unity's Sean Tocci bettered his points-per-game average scoring 26 on the evening.

The first-half featured four ties and four lead changes as the SeaWolves outscored their opponent by an 11-point margin. SMCC protected its lead by matching Unity's 33-point total in the second half. The home team beat the Rams on the glass tallying 14 more rebounds, and assisting on more than 50 percent of its makes to capture an ever-important YSCC divisional win.

The SMCC men improve to 11-2 in conference play and 19-5 overall to remain the second seed in the North. The Rams fall to 6-13 overall.

Next, the SeaWolves will tangle with the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College in the best basketball rivalry in Maine on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Tip-off from the HUB is set for 8 p.m.
