RANDOLPH, Vt.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team secured its first Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) regular season title since 2015 with an 81-72 victory at Vermont Technical College (VTC) on Saturday, Feb. 12.
The visiting SeaWolves trailed 43-40 at the half as they battled an exceptional shooting performance by VTC, and found themselves down again by a basket with 1:04 left in regulation. Sophomore captain Zachary Mickle (Billerica, Mass.) responded with one of his six three-pointers to give SMCC the lead and spark an 11-0 run to finish the game.
Mickle led all scorers with 25 points—a season-high. Junior captain Ian Regan (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) recorded 17 points and five assists, and sophomore captain Cameren Cousins (Wells, Maine) notched his 13th double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in 37 minutes on the floor.
VTC's Daniel Oliver-Kowalczyk led his team with 16 points on 7-13 shooting.
SMCC finishes the regular season at 16-5 overall and 13-1 in YSCC play. VTC concludes at 7-20 and 6-8 in the conference standings.
The SeaWolves will enter the conference playoffs as the #1 seed—their opponent and schedule will be announced early next week.
