SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine-- The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team defeated the Wyverns from Quinsigamond Community College (NJCAA) in its season opener on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 67-57.

The first half of the game saw the Seawolves get out to an early 10-0 lead, and outscoring Quinsigamond by a 10-point margin after 20 minutes of action. After a lackluster 26.2 percent from the field in the first half, Quinsigamond found new life in the second mounting a comeback that would bring the Wyverns within two points. The home team found a way to separate themselves midway through the half and keep the visitors at distance for the remainder.

Sophomore guard Cayman Warburton (Worcester, Mass.) contributed 12 points on 50 percent shooting. Sophomore Luke Briggs (Augusta, Maine) put together a career night, scoring 20 points and making three of five three-point attempts. Junior captain Thomas Martinotti (Harwinton, Conn.) played a crucial role down the stretch, topping 13 points and dishing out six assists; and first-year Adam Savage (Skowhegan, Maine) balanced the box score with 12 rebounds. The Seawolves connected at a 40.9 percent clip from the field, and assisted on 19 of 27 made field goals.

Quinsigamond's Daniel Edmonds led his team with 18 points over 38 minutes of action. Big man Luka Vlajkovic contributed nine points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Next, the Seawolves will play host to the Midshipmen from the Naval Academy Preparatory School on Saturday, Nov. 4. Tip-off at The HUB is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
