SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team spoiled its 6-game win streak falling to the hands of Berkeley College 68-63 in non-conference play on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Junior co-captain Thomas Martinotti (Harwinton, Conn.) scored eight of his 12 points in the first half to give his team a 2-point advantage at the break. Rookie forward Adam Savage (Skowhegan, Maine) opened the second half with a dunk and a made three-pointer as the SMCC lead grew to 13 with 16 minutes remaining in the game.

Berkeley came storming back to even the score at 55 apiece with the clock showing less than four minutes. The road team would take credit for 11 of the final 16 points of the contest to pick up the win.

The Seawolves were better in all shooting categories and even out-rounded Berkeley 42-41—it was the turnover count that proved to be the difference.

Martinotti and Savage combined for 24 points, and sophomore forward Luke Briggs (Augusta, Maine) contributed 11 points. Sophomore co-captain Randy Vasquez (Methuen, Mass.) ripped nine rebounds in 26 minutes of action.

Berkeley's Justyce Coleman came off the bench to lead his team with 21 points on 8-13 shooting.

SMCC moves to 13-5 overall; Berkeley stands 5-7.

The Seawolves eye a regular season sweep of the University of Maine at Augusta when they host the Moose on Wednesday, Jan. 24. Tip-off at The HUB is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
