
CONCORD, N.H. – Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball secured a hard-fought 62-55 victory over NHTI in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) matchup on Wednesday night.
SUMMARY
The Seawolves controlled the glass, out-rebounding NHTI 53-36, which proved to be a major factor in the win. Charlie Houghton (Dixfield, Maine) led the way with a double-double, finishing with 15 points and 20 rebounds while Thomas Martinotti (Harwinton, Conn.) added 18 points and four rebounds to pace the offense.
Cole Pulkinen (Hebron, Maine) contributed 11 points and eight rebounds, while Sean Bosia (Dracut, Mass.) chipped in seven points and made key free throws late in the game to help maintain SMCC's lead. The Seawolves shot 42.1% from the field, compared to 29.0% from NHTI, making the difference in a game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half was a back-and-forth battle featuring 12 lead changes, as both teams traded baskets early. SMCC held a slight 31-30 edge at halftime, with Houghton leading the charge offensively.
The second half saw 4 more lead changes. Silva's three pointer at the 12:41 mark sparked the final lead change and allowed the Seawolves to gain control. The Seawolves led by as much as 11 points late in the game however some NHTI defensive stops and a pair of threes by Isiah Ayers put the game within five points with 26 seconds left. Ultimately, Pulkinen and Martinotti's free throws sealed the victory for the Seawolves.
