SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team took care of business in a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Northern Essex Community College (NECC) on Tuesday, Apr. 17.
Game 1: W, 14-0 (5 innings)
Sophomore Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.) made her eleventh start of the season in a two-hit shutout performance in route to her twelfth career win.
The SeaWolves connected for 14 hits and four walks to produce plenty of run support for Mackenzie. First-year Meranda Martin (Richmond, Maine) was a perfect 2-2 from the plate, first-year Madison Eastman (South Berwick, Maine) notched a team-high three RBIs, and first-year Sara Ring (Wells, Maine) recorded three hits to come around to score all three times.
SMCC scored three in the first inning, seven in the third, and four more in the fourth to finish the contest in five innings.
Game 2: W, 9-0 (5 innings)
Sophomore Sarah Guimond (East Waterboro, Maine) made the start in game two as part of Coach Magnant's trusty duo. Guimond tossed her third complete game of the season to allow only one hit and one walk, using eight strikeouts to secure her fourteenth career win as a SeaWolf.
The SMCC offense came away with 10 hits and six walks to score seven in the first and two more in the fourth inning. Guimond, Martin, and first-year Emily Emerson (Topsham, Vt.) and Jaime Grimard (Pelham, N.H.) all recorded multi-hit games to help the SeaWolves to a five-inning victory.
The Lady Wolves improve to 11-13 overall but look to get back to .500 in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) play when they host Central Maine Community College for a twin bill on Wednesday, Apr. 18 beginning at 3 p.m. Follow the action using the LIVE STATS link.
