
South Portland - In tonight's YSCC conference matchup between NHTI and SMCC the Lady Seawolves jumped out to an early lead, but lost that lead with 7:44 to go in the first half and didn't regain it until a Maria Veino (Sanford, ME) layup at 4:34 mark in the second half to put the Lady Seawolves up 46-45. The Lady Seawolves were able to hang on for the remainder of regulation slipping by the Lady Lynx 59-55.
With the score 19-10, in favor of the Lady Seawolves, with 11:32 left in the first half, the Lady Lynx went on a 20-4 run to go into halftime with a 30-23 lead. The Lynx would hold the Lady Seawolves at 23 points until the 17:58 mark in the second half when Danielle McCusker (South Portland, ME) hit one of her four three pointers to make the score 32-26.
With 00:48 remaining in regulationand the score knotted at 53-53, shooting guard Esther Palmieri (South Portland, ME) nailed a three pointer to put the Lady Seawolves up 56-53. McCusker would pad that lead with two made free throws with 00:22 remaining, putting the Lady Seawolves up 58-53. NHTI's Sara Romano (Lebanon, NH) chipped in a layup with eight seconds remaining to put the Lady Lynx within three points but a Palmieri made free throw with five seconds left put the Lady Seawolves up 59-55 and solidified the victory for SMCC.
McCusker and Palmieri led the way for the Lady Seawolves dropping in 18 and 15 points respectively and each knocking down four three pointers. SMCC foward Nyalieb Deng (Portland, ME) also chipped in eight points and 14 boards. Leading the Lady Lynx were point guard Romano who scored 17 points and forward Allura LeBlanc (Northwood, NH) who chipped in 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
With this win the Lady Seawolves improve to 8-2 overall and 6-0 in YSCC conference play. The Lady Seawolves will return to action on Wednesday December 11th at home against Central Maine Community College at 6pm.
