South Portland - In this afternoon's women's basketball action the Lady Seawolves overcame a 10 point halftime deficit to defeat the Lady Islanders of John Abbott College by two points, 59-57.
With 13:48 remaining in regulation the Lady Seawolves trailed 32-40 when a Roberta Trafton (Corinth, ME) jumper spurred an 11-2 run to put the Seawolves up 43-42 at the 8:22 mark. Trafton scored all six of her points during the run, Nyalieb Deng (Portland, ME) chipped in a layup and one free throw during the run and Jaimi Poland (Skowhegan, ME) knocked down two from the charity stripe. The Lady Seawolves were sporting a five point lead with 18 seconds left when Lady Islander Joy-Celine Bermillo got fouled on a three point shot, converted on all three free throws and brought the lead to within two, 57-59. The Lady Seawolves held on for the remaining seconds to pull out the two point victory.
Pacing the Seawolves were post players Maria Veino (Sanford, ME) 13 points, 12 rebounds and Nyalieb Deng, 11 points and nine rebounds. Point guard Esther Palmieri (South Portland, ME) chipped in 12 points and dished out six assists and shooting guard Danielle McCusker (South Portland, ME) put up 11 points to go with four assists and four rebounds. The Lady Islanders were led by shooting guard Sheila Ansah who dropped in a game high 15 points and grabbed six rebounds.
With this win the Lady Seawolves improve to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in YSCC conference play. The Lady Seawolves will be back in action on Wednesday January 15th at Eastern Maine Community College at 6pm.
