Seawolves Rally in Second Half to Take Road Win Over Owls

Up by as many as 15 points in the second half, Maine-Presque Isle could not hold onto the lead and succumbed to the pressing defense of the Seawolves, as SMCC grabbed the 68-58 victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Owls went into halftime with a 37-30 lead and came out on fire, behind 3-balls from shooting guards Brianna Losee and Katie Patenaude, extending the Owls lead to 46-34 in the first two minutes of the second stanza.

Presque Isle would hold a ten point advantage until the 7:19 mark in the second half when Jordan Turner (Casco, ME) connected on two free throws.  Turners points from the charity stripe sparked a 7-0 run that propelled the Seawolves back into the game with 7:13 left in the game, making the score 55-49.

Losee would hit a corner three at 5:48 in hopes of slowing the Seawolves momentum, but the Owls would not score again in the period as the Seawolves finished the game on a huge 18-0 run that crushed any Owl hope of getting back into the game.

Seawolves post player Alicia Hoyt (Steep Falls, ME) had 22 points to lead SMCC in scoring. Hoyt teamed with fellow pose player Amira Jones (Chicopee, MA), 13 points and 12 rebounds, to dominate the paint which allowed the much larger Seawolves to take a commanding rebound advantage. SMCC outrebounded the Owls 23-15 in the second half and 45-32 for the game. SMCC had 16 offensive boards on the game to the Owls seven. Point guard Tiana Burton (Brunswick, ME) chipped in with 13 points and Turner ended with nine points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Owl point guard Darby Toth scored 22 points and dished out a game high nine assists. While post player Rebecca Campbell secured her 14th consecutive double-double with 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.  Losee scored 16, including five long-range bombs.

The Seawolves will see the court again on Tuesday night at home against Unity College at 6pm.
