Lady Seawolves Use Balanced Attack to Take Down Clippers

South Portland - This afternoon the Lady Seawolves used eleven players on offense to help pick up the 70-34 conference victory against the Clippers of UMaine-Machias.

The Seawolves struggled to create separation in the first quarter, leading by just five with 1:49 remaining. A jump shot by junior guard Zyrah Giustra (New Sharon, ME) and a layup by senior center Alicia Hoyt (Steep Falls, ME) to close out the period gave SMCC a 17-8 advantage. The Clippers started the second quarter with back to back three pointers by Alicen Brooks to pull UMM to within three, 17-14. Three consecutive made free throws by Seawolves' center Amira Jones (Chicopee, MA) sparked a 19-3 run to give SMCC a 36-17 halftime lead. In the final two periods the Seawolves outscored the Clippers 34-17 to take the eventual 70-34 triumph.

Jones led the Seawolves with 14 points and eight rebounds. Point guard Destinie Montano (Chicopee, MA) added 10 points and three assists and Giustra pitched in eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

Brooks paced the Clippers with 12 points and Mariah Kirshman grabbed a game high 10 rebounds.

The Lady Seawolves improve to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the YSCC while the Clippers fall to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Seawolves will be back in action tomorrow at 12pm when they host Hampshire College.
