Seawolves Cruise Past Clippers

Machias - This afternoon Seawolves point guard Jordan Turner (Casco, ME) scored the first eight points of the game to give SMCC an 8-2 lead over UMaine-Machias. The Seawolves proceeded to outscore the Clippers 23-5 in the first quarter as they cruised to a 77-47 victory. 

The Clippers were able to find their offense in the second quarter, rattling off 11 points over a two minute stretch to cut the Seawolves lead to thirteen, 31-18. The teams exchanged baskets for brief period but the Seawolves closed out the quarter with a made free throw by Vanese Barnes (Jay, ME) and a last second layup by Abigail Nielsen (North Yarmouth, ME) to extend the SM lead to 40-23 entering the break.

The Seawolves came out firing after the intermission with a 12-0 run, which included a three pointer from Destinie Montano (Chicopee, MA) and an old-fashioned three point play by Barnes. UMM's Kali Alley halted the Clippers offensive drought when she hit two from the charity stripe and spurred an 8-6 UMM run but the Seawolves were able to maintain a 58-31 advantage entering the final period. Sammie Griffin (Union, ME) paced the Seawolves in the fourth scoring five of SM's 16 points, which included a coast to coast drive and a make from beyond the arc, to give the Seawolves the 77-47 triumph.

Turner led the Lady Seawolves with a team high 13 points while center Alicia Hoyt (Steep Falls, ME) added a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Maria Veino (Sanford, ME) chipped in 12 points and Amira Jones (Chicopee, MA) added eight points and eight rebounds. 

Alley paced the Clippers with 12 points and eight boards while teammate Shannon Garland netted 11.

The Lady Seawolves (19-7, 8-4 YSCC) will close out conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Auburn to play YSCC rival Central Maine Community College at 6pm.
