Women’s Basketball Notches Season’s First Win at Cam-Am

AUBURN, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College women's basketball team won in its first game of the 2016-17 season over Cegep Champlain St. Lawrence 59-52 at the Can-Am Tournament hosted by Central Maine Community College.

The SeaWolves held the hot hand in the first quarter, shooting nearly 59 percent from the floor, taking a 28-16 advantage over St. Lawrence into the second quarter. SMCC kept pace with its opposition for the remainder never surrendering its lead. The SeaWolves went on to secure the win by a seven point margin to start its season 1-0.

Sophomore Jordan Farquharson (Ryegate, Vt.) was the game's top scorer with 20, making three shots from beyond the arch. Farquharson added 10 rebounds and two steals in 25 minutes of play. Co-captain Hannah Heald(Union, Maine) also recorded a double-double, with 11 points and 15 boards.

Head Coach Katie Bergeron commented, "The women played great for a first game and came out firing scoring 28 points in the first quarter! The team was led by the lights-out shooting of Jordan. Hannah controlled the boards and played 33 efficient minutes for us."

The action continues from Auburn Sunday, Oct. 23 when SMCC takes on the University of New Brunswick- St. John in another non-conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 10 a.m.
