MACHIAS, Maine-- The Southern Maine Community College women's basketball team took care of business on the road in its 78-34 defeat of the University of Maine at Machias in a North Division Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) game on Saturday, Jan. 21.
Sophomore Alexis Antonacci (Long Island, N.Y.) led her team and matched her season-high point total with 15. The crafty point-guard notched four assists, pulled down six rebounds, and made three of four from beyond the arc. First-year Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) improved on her conference-leading three-point percentage hitting three of seven from downtown, tallying 12 points. Senior Jennifer Conrad (Monmouth, Maine) finished one point shy of a double-double with 11 rebounds, and fellow senior Jennifer Gendron (South Portland, Maine) poured in a season-best eight points.
The SeaWolves set the pace in the early stages of the game, outscoring the Clippers by 10 points in the first quarter. Leading by 17 at the half, SMCC came out on fire in the third as Antonacci went for 11 points and the team 31. The SeaWolves held the home team to just 34 points in total, continuing to allow the fewest points per game among all conference teams.
In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Bergeron reflected on her team's efforts. "Another great road win! This team improves every time they step on the floor, each player bettering themselves and others around them. The backcourt combination of Abdul and Antonacci was a force in our full court pressure, Conrad was dominant on the boards, and Gendron made all the hustle plays on the offensive end. We are excited for this coming week and the huge challenge we have ahead of us!"
In winning their fifth consecutive game, the SMCC women are the first to reach 10 conference wins, but still trail the unblemished Central Maine Community College in the YSCC North Division standings.
The action continues when the SeaWolves play host to the 10-7 Moose of the University of Maine at Augusta in another YSCC divisional showdown. Tip-off from the HUB is set for 6 p.m.
