SMCC Cruises to Third Straight Victory

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College women's basketball team defeated the Knights of Berkeley College (N.Y.) 65-25 in its 2016-17 home opener at the HUB Gymnasium on Sunday, Oct. 30.

SMCC made the first bucket of the game and never surrendered its lead. The SeaWolves took a 22-15 advantage into halftime but executed a 26-0 run in the third quarter to pull away from the Knights. The SeaWolves netted 38 points from the bench, controlled the glass recording 55 rebounds, and capitalized on 31 points off turnovers to improve to 3-0 overall this season.

First-year Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) was the high scorer for the SeaWolves with 15. Senior Jennifer Conrad (Monmouth, Maine) added 13 points and seven rebounds from the forward position, and co-captain Hannah Heald (Union, Maine) contributed with 10 points.

Head Coach Katie Bergeron commented, "Today was the definition of a team effort- everyone played and impacted the game positively. We started slow offensively but were sparked by the leadership at the point from Alexis and by lights-out three-point shooting from Alicia who finished with five."
