SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team suffered only its second Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) loss of the season on Sunday, Feb. 12, bested by the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) 56-49.

UMA started strong from the tip and sported an 11-point lead at the half. The Seawolves closed the game to three points with 44 seconds to go, but UMA converted four consecutive free-throws to seal the win as time expired. The difference came on the glass—SMCC was outrebounded 51-36.

Junior captain Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) totaled 12 points, five blocks and six rebounds for the Seawolves, and junior Hope Butler (Rockland, Maine) finished with seven points, three steals, and seven rebounds.

Ariana Alcide put up 14 points and 13 rebounds for UMA. Her teammates Alisyn Alley and Kaeti Butterfield combined for 26 points— Alley with eight assists and seven rebounds and Butterfield with 11 rebounds.

Seawolves' Head Coach Katie Stannard commented, "Today's game was a disappointing display of all the hard work and focus we've shown leading up.  Although we had bright spots, we just didn't bring it soon enough. Looking ahead, we have two more really big games this week which allow us to reset our focus on the next goal!"

The result moves SMCC to 17-6 overall and 10-2 in conference play.

The Seawolves play their next one against rival Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Tip-off in Auburn, Maine is set for 6:00 p.m.
