Women’s Basketball takes two in HVIAC/YSCC Challenge

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team picked up two wins in a weekend slate as part of the second annual HVIAC/YSCC Challenge on Friday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 11.

Word of Life Bible Institute: W, 85-62 | BOX

The Seawolves put together a 25-point second quarter and a 24-point third quarter to gain the separation they needed to secure a comfortable win in the team's home opener.

Senior co-captain Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) logged six blocks in the game to gain sole possession of first place on the program's all-time career list. First-year Ember Hastings (Hollis, Maine) and senior co-captain Hope Butler (Rockland, Maine) scored 15 points apiece to power SMCC's offense to a season-high 85 points.

Word of Life's Dakota Cutting led her team with 20 points in 34 minutes of action.

The Seawolves produced a consistent effort on the offensive end, outscoring the visitors in all of the first, third and fourth quarters. Junior co-captain Maddy York (Nobleboro, Maine) led all scorers in the game with 22 points on 17 shot attempts, and Andrews racked up 13 boards and a season-high seven blocks to control painted area. First-year Hannah Thorsen (Kittery, Maine) came off the bench to contribute 13 points on an efficient 5-6 from the floor.

As a team, the Seawolves converted 35.7 percent of their 14 attempts from beyond the arc and assisted on 22 of their 29 made buckets.

Berkeley's Khya Hough totaled a team-high 20 points and Keisy Villanueva played all 40 minutes to net 14 points.

SMCC remains undefeated at 3-0.

The Lady Seawolves will open Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) play at the University of Maine at Augusta on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Tip-off at the Augusta Civic Center is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
