AUGUSTA, Maine-- The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team suffered a 74-63 loss at the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) in both teams' Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) opener on Wednesday, Nov. 15.

The first quarter saw back-and-forth action, with SMCC holding a 3-point advantage. However, the Moose outscored the Seawolves by ten points in the second quarter and extended their lead in the third quarter by three. Both teams put out exciting offensive production in the fourth, even with 26 points, but a strong finish wouldn't get SMCC any closer.

First-year guard Jenna Philbrook (Rochester, N.H.) was the leading scorer for SMCC with 17 points, followed by junior co-captain Maddy York (Nobleboro, Maine) with 16 points. Senior co-captain and reigning YSCC Player of the Week Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) continued her dominance in the painted area, coming up with nine rebounds and six blocks.

UMA's Alisyn Alley and Kaeti Butterfield stood out netting 24 points apiece, combining for a perfect 16-16 from the free throw line. Alley added 10 rebounds and seven assists to her complete night.

Both teams didn't shoot it particularly well, each under their field goal percentage average. The difference proved to be on the glass, UMA out-rebounded SMCC by nine.

The Seawolves slip to 3-1 overall, 0-1 in league play; the Moose rise to 2-0, 1-0 YSCC.

Next, SMCC will travel to Clinton Community College to take on North Country Community College (NJCAA) in non-conference action on Sunday, Nov. 19. Tip-off in Clinton County, N.Y. is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
