PORTSMOUTH, N.H.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team took home its fifth consecutive win, moving past Great Bay Community College (GBCC) 54-45 in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) action on Wednesday, Dec. 6.

Junior co-captain Maddy York (Nobleboro, Maine) led her team with 16 points. First-year guard Ember Hastings (Hollis, Maine) pitched in 14 points, and senior co-captain Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) contributed 11.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Stannard reflected, "We got off to a slow start and just couldn't seem to find our rhythm on the offensive end. Maddy managed her typical scoring production and Ember stepped into a much-needed role for us tonight. Aija continues to be a defensive menace, she either registers a block or forces the opposition into a tough selection. Sometimes we need to lean on these type of player performances when it seems like the ball isn't bouncing our way. We look forward to finishing the first semester strong with home dates against two more conference opponents!"

SMCC moves to 8-1 overall, 2-1 in league play; GBCC dips to 3-2 overall, 1-2 YSCC.

Next, the Seawolves play host to Vermont State University- Randolph for more conference action on Saturday, Dec. 9. Tip-off at The HUB is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
