AUBURN, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team fell short 60-57 against Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) rivals Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Wednesday, Dec. 13.

Both teams traded buckets in the first quarter, until SMCC went ahead 10-9 at near eight minutes of game time. From this point, the Seawolves clung to a lead for three quarters and were able to build a 10-point advantage inside the fourth.

The Mustangs chipped away and netted 13 unanswered points to get ahead 55-52. First-year Macey Brown (Deer Isle, Maine) converted a layup and-one opportunity to bring the score back to 55-55 with under three minutes remaining. The home team would drop back-to-back layups to get up by two possessions. Made free throws, again by Brown, left the Seawolves trailing by three points. SMCC left a three-point attempt short of the rim at the buzzer to suffer its second loss of the season.

Junior co-captain Maddy York (Nobleboro, Maine) finished with 17 points, 5-14 from downtown. Brown totaled 12 points, senior co-captain Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) pulled down seven boards, and senior co-captain Hope Butler (Rockland, Maine) registered five assists.

CMCC's Destiny Mora Lopez logged a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

SMCC outperformed CMCC in all shooting averages, but the Mustangs were able to generate 17 more field goal attempts much to do with their rebounding on the offensive glass.

SMCC dips to 8-2 overall, 2-2 in league action. CMCC moves to 11-1, 5-0 YSCC.

The Seawolves will break for the holidays and return to play at home vs. the Community College of Rhode Island on Saturday, Jan. 6.
