Women’s Basketball completes series sweep over Great Bay

SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team completed the regular season series sweep of Great Bay Community College (GBCC), defeating the Herons 66-51 on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Great Bay opened the game on a 9-2 run, but the home team answered the bell finishing the quarter on a 15-3 run. SMCC gained more separation, outscoring the opposition by an 8-point margin in the second to enter the break ahead 32-19.

Senior co-captain Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) scored six of her 12 points in the third quarter to help SMCC to a 20-point effort. The Herons put together their best quarter in the fourth, but SMCC's lead was too big to overcome.

The Seawolves outrebounded the opposition by 14, and forced 29 turnovers to which they totaled 23 points as a result.

First-year guard Jenna Philbrook (Rochester, N.H.) logged a career night with 12 points and 15 rebounds, 11 offensive, and six assists. Junior co-captain Maddy York (Nobleboro, Maine) recorded 11 points and five steals.

Three Herons finished in double figures led by Mary Paradis' 19 points. Madison Lovely registered a double-double with 14 points and 18 rebounds.

SMCC moves to 14-2 overall, 6-2 in conference play. GBCC drops to 4-6, 2-6 YSCC.

The action continues when the Seawolves play host to the Knights from Vermont State University- Randolph on Saturday, Jan. 20. Tip-off at The HUB is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
