Women’s Basketball claims victory in regular season finale

RANDOLPH, Vt.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team completed the regular season sweep over the Knights from Vermont State University- Randolph 74-62 on Saturday, Feb. 17.

Both teams traded quarters in the first half, but the Seawolves doubled up on the Knights' scoring production in the third to establish a comfortable distance that would take them to the final whistle.

First-year Jenna Philbrook (Rochester, N.H.) came off the bench to post a career-high 19 points on an efficient 8-9 from the floor. Philbrook added nine rebounds and came away with seven steals to complete a productive afternoon. Junior co-captain Maddy York (Nobleboro, Maine) put together her 17th double-digit scoring performance of the season dropping 12 in 24 minutes of action—she added three steals and three assists. Rookie Ember Hastings (Hollis, Maine) also contributed 12 points.

Vermont's Yvonne Roberge led all scorers with 22 points and was a rebound shy of a triple-double.

SMCC generated 16 more field goal attempts than the opposition and converted at 40.3 percent—better than Vermont's 33.9 percent.

SMCC begins a new win streak and moves to 19-7 overall, 10-4 in conference play. Vermont dips to .500 at 10-10, 7-7 YSCC.

The Seawolves enter the Yankee Small College Conference post season tournament as the #3 seed and will match up with #6 Great Bay Community College in the quarterfinal round Saturday, Feb. 24. Tip-off at The HUB is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
