CUMBERLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's golf team emerged victorious at Val Halla on Wednesday, Sept. 25, outlasting a competitive field of teams from the University of New England (UNE), the University of Southern Maine (USM), Saint Joseph's College (SJC), and Husson University.
SMCC's consistent play throughout the day proved to be the difference, as they showcased remarkable precision and resilience on the challenging Val Halla course. Despite windy conditions and tricky greens, SMCC's top golfers remained composed, leading the leaderboard with steady pars and a few clutch birdies.
First-year Charlotte Blanchard (Dedham, Maine) won her second tournament in a row after a win last weekend at Riverside Golf Course at the USM Husky Invite. This time Blanchard took home the hardware with an 83. First-year Emma Hajdasz (Colchester, Conn.) was close in tow with a 94 to help the Seawolves take the team victory as well. Delaney Blake (Bowling Green, Ohio) turned in a 100.
UNE and USM pushed hard in the final holes, each team having strong individual performances, but they couldn't match SMCC's overall team effort. SJC and Husson also had moments of brilliance, but fell behind early and couldn't recover.
SMCC's victory at Val Halla marks a major achievement for the program, as they navigated the difficult layout to win their first tournament of the year.
