SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's soccer team logged yet another clean sheet with a dominate 7-0 showing over the Knights from Vermont Technical College (VTC) in its Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) opener on Sunday, Sept. 8.
Junior captain Callie O'Brien (South Portland, Maine) was first to strike in the scoring frenzy, tucking two by the Knight goalkeeper in the 6th and again in the 12th minute—first-year Isabella Marino (Dresden, Maine) assisting on the first to create a break-a-way for O'Brien in and behind the VTC defense.
First-year Samantha Weir (Chichester, N.H.) played the back pass to sophomore captain Paige Lord (Pittsfield, Maine) who chipped the keeper for the second day in a row and first-year Logan Pray (Cumberland, Maine) found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal, getting an assist from O'Brien before time ran out in the first half.
Sophomore Katelin Bennett (Freedom, Maine) netted her first of the season from junior captain Ryleigh Lord (Pittsfield, Maine), O'Brien completed the hat trick, and first-year Desiree Veilleux (Winslow, Maine) converted a penalty kick at 73:58 to produce her first cap of her rookie campaign.
First-year goalkeeper Calley Baker (Jay, Maine) recorded three total saves in 90 minutes of work.
In a post-game interview, Head Coach Ethan Wells commented, "All 18 gave us productive minutes—contributing in all phases of the game. Offensively we were creative in gaining separation from defenders, and defensively we held a tight line to trap Vermont in their defensive half. Looking to the weekend, we must continue to play a confident brand of soccer."
SMCC stays perfect at 3-0 overall, 1-0 in YSCC scheduling; VTC slips to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in league action.

The SeaWolves continue conference play and travel to Paul Smith's College (N.Y.) on Saturday, Sept. 14 for a 1 p.m. matinee kickoff.
