SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletics Department has announced Ethan Wells, former Head Women’s Soccer Coach, to be stepping down from the program.

Through seven seasons at the helm, Wells coached the Lady Seawolves to an overall mark of 51-27-11 and 20-11-6 in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) action. As the winningest coach in program history, Wells captured a conference title in 2019 and was named both YSCC and United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Div. 2 Coach of the Year in the same season. Wells led SMCC to three USCAA National Tournament appearances (2018, 2019, 2022)—making a run to the national tournament Finals in 2022 (a program first).

During his tenure, Wells produced 12 YSCC All-Conference selections, 12 USCAA All-American selections (seven first team), and 16 USCAA Academic All-Americans.

Coach Wells commented, “The women’s soccer program has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I’m forever grateful for the support from Coach Guimond and for the relationships I’ve made with current and former players. I’ll certainly miss the developmental routines of coaching but excited to watch the continued success of the program from my role as an administrator.”

Wells will continue to serve the College in the role of Interim Director of Athletics and as an adjunct faculty member in the Sport Management degree program.

An immediate search will be conducted by the department to fill the position.
