SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletics Department has announced the hiring of Garrett Lewellen as Head Women’s Volleyball Coach effective immediately.
Lewellen attended Antelope Valley Community College (Lancaster, CA) and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Ambassador University (Big Sandy, TX). During enrollment at Ambassador, Lewellen was a member of both the men’s volleyball and men’s basketball programs.
Lewellen begins his head coaching tenure at SMCC with experience at the camp and club level, most recently serving the Maine Juniors U14 Bronze team and U16 Copper team. He holds his USA Volleyball IMPACT certification and remains well connected with the local and regional volleyball offerings.
In addition to his duties on the volleyball court, Lewellen owns and operates Cornerstone Chiropractic and Rehabilitation in Portland, Maine where he treats patients, to include intercollegiate and professional athletes, with musculoskeletal disorders. He resides in Gorham, Maine with his wife and two children.
Lewellen expressed, “I am grateful for the opportunity to begin a high standard of Women’s Volleyball at SMCC. Volleyball is a game of contrasts- blending finesse and a soft accurate touch with power, complete abandonment, and all-out pursuit. My objective is to bring these qualities out in our ladies; playing a style of volleyball that is not only fun to play, but also to watch. May SMCC Volleyball be known for this style of play as well as student-athletes that bring the passion and high standards they are learning to all other areas of their lives.”
Associate Dean of Students and Director of Athletics Matt Richards states, “I’m thrilled to welcome Garrett to our coaching staff. Through the interview process, his energy and passion for volleyball was very evident and those characteristics will be key to the development of the program in our inaugural season and membership to the Yankee Small College Conference. His extensive background will play an integral role in the establishment of a long-standing and competitive volleyball program at SMCC.”
SMCC Athletics plans for a full return of athletics in 2021-22 to include its inaugural women’s volleyball program offering. For those interested in particpating, please complete the RECRUIT ME form.
