OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team repeated as Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) baseball champions defeating the #2 Mustangs from Central Maine Community College (CMCC) 5-1 at The Ballpark on Friday, May 6.
The Mustangs scratched across their only run of the game in the first inning when Jimmy Reed's lead-off single came around to score on a fielding error.
The SeaWolves waited until the fifth inning to do their damage. First-year Gabriel Rivera (Caguas, Puerto Rico) laced a go-ahead RBI-double to center field to break a 1-1 tie, and then scored on a first-and-third play to make it 3-1. SMCC gathered two more in the sixth inning courtesy of first-year Derek Hoh's (Methuen, Mass.) two-out knock to right.
First-year Kalin Marum (Port Kembla, Australia) earned the start and was magnificent notching a career-high 11 strikeouts over 6.2 innings of work. The righty allowed just three hits and two walks before turning things over to first-year Anthony Sayers (Benoni, South Africa) who recorded the final out by way of a strikeout.
Hoh was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Offensive Player; Marum was awarded Tournament MVP. View the photo gallery of the tournament awards HERE.
The SeaWolves will await the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Bid Show on Sunday, May 8 to determine a Small College World Series appearance in DuBois, Penn.
The show airs at 6:15 p.m. WATCH.
