Men’s Soccer Advances to Conference Championship with Win Over NHTI

Concord, NH – Head coach Brian Dougher recorded his 50th win as coach of the Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's soccer team as the Seawolves beat NHTI 3-2 this afternoon.  With the win, the team advances to Sunday's Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) championship game.  The Seawolves entered the tournament as the #1 seed in the East Division and faced NHTI as the #2 seed in the West Division.

SMCC controlled the game in the first half.  Sophomore midfielder Peter Dore (Westbrook, ME) scored the first goal unassisted after dribbling through NHTI's entire defense.  Later, freshman forward Jonathan Coyne (Cumberland, ME) scored off a give-and-go assist from junior Keith McClure (Buxton, ME).

NHTI would score to open the second half, but that was quickly answered by junior Blais Whitney (Cornish, ME), the YSCC Player of the Year, who stole the ball from an NHTI defender and found the back of the net. NHTI would score one more before the end of regulation to close out the game 3-2.

Freshman goalkeeper Corey Grigas (Hardwick, MA) played another solid 90 minutes for the Seawolves.  He recorded 12 saves on the day including 5 in the first half and 7 in the second.

The Seawolves will face the West Division's #1 seed, Paul Smith's College, in the championship game tomorrow, October 23rd.  Game time is slated for noon. Follow this link for directions to NHTI's campus http://www.nhti.edu/directions.html.
