Amory Houghton Named Head Men’s Soccer Coach

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletics Department has announced the hiring of Amory Houghton as Head Men’s Soccer Coach effective immediately.

Previous to his appointment at SMCC, Houghton served in assistant coaching positions at St. Joseph’s College (Maine), Aurora University (Ill.), and the University of Massachusetts (NCAA Div. 1). He also did head coaching stints at the club level with Seacoast United (Maine) and Campton United (Ill.).

The Maine native played his collegiate soccer at NCAA Div. 2 Franklin Pierce University (N.H.), where he helped lead the Ravens to a national Final Four appearance sporting the best record in program history (21-1-1). He was appointed team captain in his senior season.

Along the way, Houghton has obtained his USSF C, D, and E licenses.

Houghton earned his bachelor’s in Business Administration from Franklin Pierce (2013) and his MBA at Aurora (2019).

Houghton expressed, “I can’t wait to be a part of our local community college. When I returned to Maine two years ago, I wanted to remain in the soccer world as well as make an impact on local players. This role is just what I was hoping for—I’m very excited to get started. Special thanks to Matt Richards, Ethan Wells, and the rest of the coaching staff for welcoming me to the team. Go Seawolves!”

Associate Dean of Athletics and Alumni Affairs Matt Richards stated, “During the review process, Amo’s conversation with regards to his vision of the student-athlete experience and how his background applies really stood out to myself and the search committee. I’m looking forward to working alongside him as he puts his vision into action.”

In addition to his duties at SMCC, Houghton works at Consigli Construction in Portland as a Recruiter, focused on staffing for field operations, project management, and self-perform work.
